The Algorithms, Machines, and People Laboratory (AMPLab) at UC Berkeley has developed open source software that is driving innovation in the big data industry; components of the comprehensive Berkeley Data Analytics Stack (BDAS)—which includes Apache Spark, Tachyon, MLlib, and GraphX—are used widely in industry and research. Recently, the AMPLab has been pushing the stack in new directions, including end-to-end support for machine-learning pipelines, low-latency model serving, and human-in-the-loop processing, among others. Michael Franklin offers an overview of the Berkeley Data Analytics Stack, outlines the current directions it’s taking, and settles once and for all how BDAS should be pronounced.
