Martin Yip and Justin Murray explore the benefits of virtualization of Hadoop on vSphere—the first step in providing Hadoop on the public or private cloud. All dynamic environments that require rapid, on-demand provisioning of Hadoop clusters need virtualization as the core infrastructure. Martin and Justin delve deeply into three different examples of real-world deployments—at small, medium, and large scales—to demonstrate how enterprises are currently deploying Hadoop differently on virtual machines. Martin and Justin cover virtual machine placement onto physical host servers (important for best performance), best practices for building Hadoop clusters on virtual platforms, and key obstacles. Martin and Justin will give out a set of technical papers and references that cover each case study in detail at the conclusion of the talk. Attendees will leave confident in their ability to deploy Hadoop clusters using virtualization. This session is sponsored by VMware.
