Most corporate design teams have to recruit focus groups for conducting their research and user-testing on. Even after an expensive recruitment, they fail to get quality data/information to work upon because of the disinterest in involvement by the focus group. But when a community is involved, the situation is the right opposite and we end up getting more than we bargained for. The Open Design Toolkit would consist of various methodologies(design & research) that could help a design team to make the best out of a community by suggesting certain immersion point in the design process, proposed documentation standards that could help one team leverage the outcome of activities conducted by another team. This could eventually lead to the formation of an open design network that would act as a support system for one another and bring diverse viewpoints to the table that one team alone could never achieve.
