Many know that IT applications as containers can be orchestrated by Kubernetes. Do you know that there are industry efforts to extend Kubernetes to deploy Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) and Containerized Network Functions (CNFs)? By bringing networking and performance concepts from Openstack to Kubernetes world, one can use Kubernetes to orchestrate all kinds of deployment types (VNFs, CNFs, VMs, containers and functions). In this talk, we will present the work that was done in LFN community - ONAP and OPNFV, CNCF community and LFE community - Akraino to enable K8S to deploy VNFs and CNFs. We, then talk about roadmap items - soft and strict multi-tenancy in K8S, network slicing, service mesh acceleration and supporting provider networks etc… At the end, we briefly touch upon some of the use cases from ONAP that demonstrate inter-working of VNFs, CNFs and Micro-Services together.
