5G, autonomous devices, immersive experiences and industrial internet of things require high data throughput and low latency. These are the main use cases why data processing is now moving rapidly to the edge of networks.Numerous open source projects are working with these challenges. There are lot of edge cloud activities ongoing for example in OPNFV, Akraino, ONAP, CNCF and OpenStack open source projects. Close cooperation is required between all these projects as well as with standardization bodies to speed up the development.In this talk we tell what is needed to overcome low latency, high data peak rates, M2M communication and massive traffic growth challenges. We cover as well what kind of role open source components play at the edge of networks
