The desire to simplify network operations in complex multi-layer transport networks is driving commoditization of equipment along with intelligent software tools to control, configure and observe such networks. This so-called disaggregation of both packet and optical networks is a major source of innovation in transport networks. We introduce the newly launched ODTN project (short for Open and Disaggregated Transport Networks), an industry-wide initiative to build an open source reference platform and deliver production-ready solutions using an innovative supply chain model.

The BigDL framework scales deep learning for large datasets using Apache Spark. However there is significant scheduling overhead from Spark when running BigDL at large scale. Shivaram Venkataraman and Sergey Ermolin outline a new parameter manager implementation that along with coarse-grained scheduling can provide significant speedups for deep learning models like Inception and VGG.
