While the industry has come to a consensus around disaggregating the data plane, the control plane remains monolithic and proprietary, manifested by control plane applications written for a specific controller, in a prescribed language, and running in the controller process space; exposing serious deployment drawbacks. David will describe a mechanism to intercept communication between OpenFlow devices and the SDN controller and how this technology can be used to disaggregate the control plane, allowing SDN applications to be implemented as separate components, independent of the SDN controller. After describing and demonstrating the technology, David will expand on how the existing implementation might be carried forward to provide a disgregated control plane, including disaggregating capabilities such as intents, device connectivity, flow synchronization, monitoring, and storage.
