Gartner estimates that “at least 95 percent of IT organizations will leverage nontrivial elements of open source technology in their mission-critical IT portfolios, and fewer than 50 percent of organizations will have implemented an effective strategy for procuring and managing open source." Ironically, as much as large enterprises need to maximize their leverage on open source technologies, the reality is that legal, security and other compliance mandates constantly impede their ability to do so. With intellectual property governance requirements, the business risks of license infringements, open source vulnerabilities, together with silos of duties and the costly, long-cycled process, developers are pushed away from the “open technology first” movement. And at the same time, the coexistence of compliance process and continuous delivery seems mission impossible. Bianca Jiang explores the paradox of open source compliance and continuous delivery with open source, sharing her experience, lessons learned, and the best of DevOps principles. Along the way, Bianca outlines a microservices-based architecture and offers a fresh perspective on compliance requirements.
