The Seattle Internet Exchange was inspired by a 111ms RTT between two networks on the same floor of the Westin Building carrier hotel. Direct connection of those networks, and the addition of a third, resulted in the exchange point launching in June 1997. This presentation introduces the SIX and recounts how it surmounted the technical, business, and organizational challenges it faced. Where does the SIX stand after 20 years and what could that mean for other community IXPs?
