From pioneering the commercialization of router technology as the co-founder of Cisco Systems in the 80s to creating forward-thinking optical networking innovations today, Len has been a key contributor to the networking industry for decades. A key element of any network is the ability to aggregate traffic. Statistical multiplexing, with traces to the aggregation of telephone circuits in the 1960’s, provides a scalable approach to dynamic bandwidth allocation, and is an important element of network designs today. As router port data rates climb, so goes the power and cooling requirements as well as costs. How can network designs maximize these investments while continuing to expand?
